The traditional English language method expresses time as 'minutes past' and 'minutes to' the hour. This
method is used in many countries alongside the 12 & 24 hour format for timetables

Teaching a child to tell the time in ‘minutes past and to the hour’ requires a 3-Step Time
Teaching System:

Step 1:

Read the number at the end of the long hand

'...8'

Step 2:

Say which side the long hand is pointing to:

'minutes to' pink side, 'minutes past' green side

'....minutes to'

Step 3:

Read the number at the end of the short hand

'...2'

Put it all together:

'...8 minutes to 2' 

It really is that easy!

Now practise until the 3 steps become second nature.
