Phase 5 builds on earlier phonics and blends by introducing alternative vowel sounds and additional letter patterns.

Week-by-Week Activities

Activities progress in a structured sequence around Phase 5 of the Letters & Sounds systematic phonics program.

Reading & Spelling

As children sound out words within each activity, they continue developing their reading and spelling skills.

Phase 5 covers the following vowel sounds and letter patterns within the Letters & Sounds progression:

This workbook supports children as they continue developing their knowledge of the 44 sounds of the English language and work with alternative vowel sounds and letter patterns.

💡 Is Phase 5 the right workbook? Phase 5 is designed for children who have already worked through earlier phonics sounds and consonant blends and are ready to practise alternative vowel sounds and more complex letter patterns. If they are still working with blends, start with Phase 4. If they are moving into spelling patterns and suffixes, Phase 6 may be the next stage.
