Choose a library collection for reading practice across a range of phonics phases. The options contain different texts and serve different learner interests; each library is sold separately.
Plan your classroom collection
- Match text to teaching
- Select individual books using pupils’ taught graphemes, tricky words and vocabulary. A multi-phase library supports a range of needs; pupils do not start at the same point simply because they are the same age.
- Phase versus set
- A phase identifies a phonics focus. Set 1 and Set 2 are different collections; Set 2 is not the next phase after Set 1.
- Copies for group reading
- Plan additional copies separately where pupils need to read the same title at the same time. A range of different titles does not supply a class set of one book.

Suggested classroom use
Suggested teaching routine. For group work, plan the number of copies separately if every pupil needs the same title.
Prepare
Match the book to letter patterns and tricky words already taught. Revisit unfamiliar vocabulary before reading.
Listen & support
Listen to the pupil read and note decoding that needs further teaching. Discuss the meaning of the text.
Revisit
Use a reread to practise accurate, fluent reading. Let your observations guide the next text you select.
