- Blending and reading adjacent consonants within words, while drawing on previously taught letter patterns.
- Pattern examples
- Final and initial consonant clusters such as nd, mp, st, tr, dr, br, fl and str. Pupils need to attend to each consonant when blending.
- Text selection
- Standard collections and Hi-Lo fiction distribute consonant focuses across the pack. Science books are listed as whole-phase revision.
- Match to your teaching
- Check the clusters and tricky words in the individual book before teaching. Use repeated reading to practise accuracy and phrasing after the text has been decoded.

Suggested classroom use
